CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS & SAILORS SYSTEM

CONFEDERATE TENNESSEE TROOPS: 24th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry

24th Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in August, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the following counties: Rutherford, Williamson, Macon, Sumner, DeKalb, Maury, Coffee, Hickman, and Wilson. After taking part in the conflicts in Shiloh and Perryville, the unit was attached to General Stewart's, Strahl's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It was active on many battlefields from Murfreesboro to Atlanta (http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/ga017.htm), returned to Tennessee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. This regiment took 406 effectives to Shiloh, had 68 disabled at Perryville (http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/ky009.htm), and lost twenty-three percent of the 344 at Murfreesboro. It reported 43 casualties at Chickamauga, 45 at Missionary Ridge (http://www.civilwarhome.com/missionaryridge.htm), and totalled 257 men and 148 arms in December, 1863. Few surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Robert D. Allison, Hugh L.W. Bratton, and John A. Wilson; Lieutenant Colonels Thomas H. Peebles, Samuel E. Shannon, and John J. Williams; and Major William C. Fielding.

~TAKEN FROM TENNESSEEANS IN THE CIVIL WAR~VOL.1, 1964

The greater part of these men received their training at Camp Trousdale on the L & N RR near the little village of Richland Station, now Portland. Here they were organized into regiments, uniformed as well as possible, armed with Flintlock Muskets and given tents. Brick ovens for baking were built, the remains of which can be found today. The camp was north-eastward from Portland and included therein was Cold Spring School. The school building was used as a hospital and has been moved to another location on the McGlothlin farm where it still stands, being used as an outbuilding. The field just across the road from the Eddie Jones farm was used as a drill field. It is said that one Regimental Band could only play two tunes, namely "The Girl I Left Behind Me" and "The Bob-Tailed Nag".

As so many men were there, lack of sanitation soon began to take its toll. Hundreds of beeves and hogs were butchered, the waste from which were thrown into a sink hole. This drained into the water supply from Cold Spring causing Dysentery and Typhoid. The open ditch latrines did not help the matter. This forced the moving of Camp Trousdale to a location west of Portland near the Gas Pumping Station. Faint traces are to be seen there. A marker will be noticed on the side of the highway giving information as to the units that were trained at Camp Trousdale at the entrance to the Vanatta farm.

COMPANY A, 24th TENNESSEE REGIMENT, CONFEDERATE ARMY

Newspaper chipping furnished by Sue Ferguson Puckett
Company "A" was organized in Versailles, Tennessee under the two oak trees on the south side of the store. The record established by the 24th during battles at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Stones River, Chicamauga, and Atlanta is one of great interest to Versailles and the Tenth District.
Records at the National Battlefield at Murfreesboro reveal the 24th as a well-organized regiment. They served under General Bragg and were assigned to vital points in the thick of the conflict. Many descendants of this regiment still reside in the area.

Allison's Tennessee Cavalry Squadron
http://www.tennessee-scv.org/Camp1513/allison.htm
Allison's Tennessee Cavalry Squadron was raised March 1862, at Alexandria, TN., by Col. R. D. Allison, John S. Reece, and Robert V. Wright. Col. Allison and John Reece had previously served with the 24th Tennessee Infantry but had been discharged due to their age.

. . . The three companies that made up Allison's were mostly men from DeKalb Co. TN with a few from the surrounding counties. It was one of the few DeKalb units that actually fought in there home area. During the first half of 1863 it was involved in several small battles and skirmishes in and around Alexandria and Liberty.
